energetic materials assessment

We provide a comprehensive range of small-scale laboratory and large-scale testing services for energetic materials for a global client base. Testing is performed on propellants, pyrotechnics and explosives both for research purposes and for classification, packaging and labeling (DoT, UN, etc.).

In addition to providing testing services, our expert staff also advises on all aspects of safe handling of energetic materials including the provision of Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and Process Safety Management (PSM) services. Over the past 30 years, we have conducted numerous inspections, performed extensive process safety audits and specialized safety evaluations of commercial and governmental operations involving chemical, propellant, pyrotechnic and explosives manufacturing in facilities worldwide.

project engineering for chemical plant

Chilworth’s Project Engineering team is highly experienced in all aspects of plant engineering, particularly where hazardous and complex processes are involved.

Whether you require a new build or modification of existing facilities, our team can help support and manage all stages of your project, including:

  • Process Evaluation: scoping and feasibility through to budgeting forecast
  • Process Design: specializing in basic engineering, leading to detailed engineering
  • Plant Start-up: commissioning and hand-over services

instrumentation

Process Safety Laboratory Instruments

Chilworth has supplied process safety equipment and instruments to industry and academic institutions since 1986. The instruments we supply, which measure electrostatic, explosion and thermal stability properties, have a proven track record in industry, and their performance and reliability is validated by their use in our own laboratories.

JCI Electrostatic Measurement and Consulting

Chilworth also designs, develops and manufactures high quality instruments for electrostatic measurements under the JCI brand. Our highly acclaimed electrostatic charge decay analyzer, the JCI 155v6, has recently been updated and we believe currently outperforms all others on the market today. JCI also offers consultancy and testing services and formal calibration of electrostatic measuring instruments to BS 7506: Part 2: 1996.

Ask the Experts

Finding the right instrument to provide relevant and appropriate test data for your process safety and electrostatic needs is not always straightforward. Chilworth provides free consultation to prospective buyers to ensure you purchase a cost effective solution for your equipment needs.

Training

We also recognize that companies developing their own process safety laboratory or electrostatics facilities may benefit from our knowledge and assistance. We therefore provide training in instrument use to match customized client requirements. This training can either be provided in our fully equipped process safety test laboratories or at the client’s site.

Test Standards

All instrumentation is manufactured to comply with relevant national and international standards including BS, IEC, ASTM, VDI, DIN, UN and European Commission Packaging and Labeling standards, to name a few. In fact our consultant engineers frequently contribute to various standards committees, with an understanding of industry’s needs gained from their consulting work.

Custom Manufacture

Chilworth also specializes in the custom manufacture of non-standard equipment and instruments to either meet a client’s specific in-house test requirements or to meet other test standards not covered by our normal instrument range.

Reliable and Dependable

We offer a comprehensive global instrument supply service, supported by detailed documentation, efficient after-sales support and comprehensive equipment warranties to guarantee peace-of-mind in your purchase.

mesuring vapor flammability

Process hazard studies require flammability data on all liquids and gases handled in industrial processes. The gas and vapor flammability range of test equipment provides the necessary information.

Autoignition Temperature Apparatus

For the determination of the temperature at which gas or vapor will auto-ignite.

Flammable Range Apparatus

For the measurement of upper and lower flammable limits of gases and vapors.

Flash Point Test Apparatus

For the determination of flash point of a vapor from a liquid.

determining explosivity

A range of instruments is available to determine the explosive properties and sensitivity to mechanical stimulation of highly energetic materials. This information is required for in-house process safety screening and for notification and transportation purposes.

BAM Fallhammer

To study the impact sensitivity of solids and liquids.

BAM Friction Tester

To examine the sensitivity of solids and pastes to sliding (frictional) contact.

Koenen Tube Apparatus

To study the sensitivity of solids and liquids to intense heating under partial confinement.

Time Pressure Test Apparatus

To study the effect of an ignition on substances under confinement and, in particular, whether ignition will lead to deflagration or detonation.

Laboratory Testing

lab testing

We operate one of DEKRA's world premier chemical process hazards laboratories. Process safety testing is used to develop the data on which fire and explosion hazard assessments and incident investigations should be based.
